語言人類學是人類學的四大學術分支之一，它在北美的大學的人文社會科學訓練已成為非常重要的課程，然而，語言人類學的發展在東亞國家的大學多在起步的階段。語言人類學的研究議題從早期人類學的典範關注於非西方語言和文化的研究，發展為關注受全球化衝擊、社會變遷、政治變革影響下的語言和文化。語言人類學研究透過深入的田野調查工作和語料分析，提出許多重要的理論和分析架構用於分析語言、文化、和社會間的互動關係，語言人類學的理論知識更深遠地影響了其它以語言研究為主的學科。本次的圓桌論壇將會與來自加拿大、美國、日本的三位語言人類學家進行對談，他們將會分享個人的學術研究經歷，以及他們受到語言人類學學術訓練和知識的啟發和影響。

One of the fastest growing subfields in North American anthropology, linguistic anthropology remains relatively unknown in East Asia despite significant contributions to the discipline by scholars working in the region. One of the original “four fields” of the discipline, linguistic anthropology has a long and esteemed history, but it is also changing rapidly, evolving far beyond its early roots documenting indigenous languages. Linguistic anthropology has not only made important contributions to the study of interactions between language and society, it has also shaped how contemporary scholars in a wide range of disciplines think about fundamental questions relating to culture and social action. This roundtable offers a unique opportunity to learn more about these developments through dialog with three visiting scholars, each drawing from their own academic biography to discuss how training in linguistic anthropology has shaped their work.
